Times Colonist: Design Victoria pulls back the curtain on city's creative culture

The fourth annual Design Victoria festival offers a mix of the experiential and educational.

A four-day festival celebrating the growing design community in Victoria gets underway Thursday night, with the end goal being … what, exactly?

“I have a hard time [explaining it], and I’ve been doing this for four years,” Carla Sorrell, director and co-founder of Design Victoria, said with a big laugh. “And I’m a writer!”

Here’s the short version: The fourth annual Design Victoria offers a mix of the experiential and educational, by way of pulling back the curtain on what is happening in the local design community, from graphics, fashion, and interior design to architecture and ceramics. Attendees will have their share of options, with an opening-night launch party Thursday (one of the festival’s only ticketed events) followed by three days of free programming featuring more than 50 events across Greater Victoria.

What’s more, spaces typically closed to the public are opening their doors for Design Victoria.

“Access to the creative culture that is happening here — that is the juice of it, for me,” Sorrell said. “There’s lots to choose from. And we’re putting it all on a plate, so you get to see some stuff that you would never have had access to.”
