In collaboration with Reliance Properties, the office of mcfarlane biggar architects + designers inc. and Zechariah Inkster of Plank and Saw - an avid hifi and music collector, we present The Listening Room, an immersive installation located in the heritage Chairman’s Office of the BC Power Commission Building, a late Art Deco landmark completed in 1950.
This installation reactivates a hidden gem within Victoria’s architectural archive. The Chairman’s Office, defined by its elegant inlaid woodwork and rich “blond” unstained paneling, reflects the refined modernity and craftsmanship of its era.
Visitors are invited to enter a space of quiet contemplation and sonic exploration. Through a series of carefully curated musical selections played on high-fidelity equipment, the installation invites guests to slow down, listen deeply, and connect with both sound and place.
Beyond a sensory experience, The Listening Room also offers a glimpse into the building’s future. Reliance Properties and OMB Architects are developing plans to rehabilitate and designate the BC Power Commission Building as a heritage structure, integrating it into a new mixed-use redevelopment that will feature a 124-room hotel, public café, and rooftop addition. The project will celebrate the building’s mid-century character while opening it to a new generation of guests and visitors.
