Join BEA West for a special screening of The White Flats, a documentary short about the Whittington Estate in the UK. Made by the residents themselves, the film explores how a thoughtfully designed housing development transformed the occupants’ lives, creating a deep sense of belonging and community. Through personal stories, it reveals how architecture can impact social connection, well-being, and everyday life.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will bring together a dynamic group of voices from Victoria’s design and community sectors to explore how these ideas apply locally. What can we learn from The White Flats? How can we design spaces that promote inclusivity, connection, and well-being?
Moderated by Ann Squires Ferguson, CEO of Western Design+Build, the panel will include an audience Q&A to spark meaningful dialogue and invite community perspectives into the conversation.
Our panelists include:
• Diana Studer, Architect AIBC, DAU Studio
• Tamara Bonnemaison, Landscape Architect, MDI Landscape Architects.
• Paulina Grainger, Manager of Arts, Equity and Community Engagement, Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA)
• Michael Demakiling, Chair of the Urban Livability and Urban Ecology & Agriculture Committees, Victoria Downtown Residents Association; Co-owner of Zero Waste Emporium Inc.
Enjoy networking and light refreshments following the panel discussion. This event is open to all — residents, students, designers, planners, community advocates, or anyone curious about the built environment’s impact. Let’s spark a conversation about how we can create more connected, inclusive neighbourhoods right here in Victoria.
This event has an option to buy a ticket with the funds being donated to the Intercultural Association (ICA). Make an impact together at this event and help BEA West raise $800 for the amazing work done at the ICA!
